Records Management

The National Archives of Scotland have produced a useful list of online resources to assist public authorities with records management within their organisations.

The Keeper of the Records of Scotland has issued a generic Model Action Plan (MAP) to help Scottish public authorities develop records management arrangements that comply with the s.61 Code of Practice on Records Management (available for viewing in pdf format on the Scottish Executive website): http://www.scotland.gov.uk/about/FCSD/MCG-NW/00018022/s61code.pdf

The MAP is available at:http://www.nas.gov.uk/foi.htm. Similar types of public authority are encouraged to adapt this generic MAP and produce their own sectoral MAPs (e.g. Higher Education sectors). For the Higher Education sector, Edinburgh University and JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) have both produced advice on Records Management: http://www.recordsmanagement.ed.ac.uk/ and http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=issue_freedom.

JISC is also producing a new Records Management service as part of JISCinfoNet (http://www.bisinfonet.ac.uk). These sites may also point you in the direction of relevant consultancy services (you would be advised to request and follow up references when considering any consultancy services for such work).

A number of organisations that may be able to provide further assistance with records management services or the recruitment of records managers include:

• Records Management Society of Great Britain: http://www.rms-gb.org.uk

• Society of Archivists: http://www.archives.org.uk

• National Archives of Scotland: foi@nas.gov.uk
