Key milestones
May 2002
The FOI Act receives Royal Assent.
December 2002
The Scottish Parliament nominates Kevin Dunion as the first Scottish Information Commissioner.
February 2003
The Commissioner takes up post and begins setting up his office.
October 2003
The office opens in St Andrews.
March 2004
The Commissioner's team begin the process of approving publication schemes for the 10,000+ public bodies that are covered by the FOI Act.
April 2004
A Commencement Order is laid before the Scottish Parliament, setting out that the FOI Act will come fully into force on 1 January 2005. This is one year earlier than the original implementation date, and ensures that the Scottish public can exercise their FOI rights at the earliest opportunity.
Throughout 2004
The Commissioner's team support a range of conferences and seminars for public authorities, to ensure compliance with the legislation.
