Overview

Scotland's FOI regime has come a long way in the five short years since the Act came into force.

A key component in the success of FOI in Scotland to date has been the opportunity to collaborate with others – both nationally and internationally – enabling us to share best practice and explore and address the potential problems that can face FOI as it develops. Other countries, including some who are considering the implementation of their own FOI regimes, have often asked the Commissioner about Scotland's legislation, enforcement framework and experience of FOI in practice.

Alongside this, a select number of research projects – supported by the Commissioner – have allowed us to monitor and assess the response to FOI across various sectors of Scottish society, helping the Commissioner to target his resources towards those areas where they will be of most benefit.
